"Masculinity Cage" Shirt

The classic light blue striped shirt your grandpa would wear everyday is now reimagined to represent toxic masculinity in today’s society. The laces that restrain you in the garment are a symbol of how men are forced to fit in certain aesthetics and gender roles. The collar and the cuffs are cut with vertical stripes which would be a mistake for a bespoke tailor made garment but are made in this way to break the rules of classical men tailoring. The restraining laces, however, are cut horizontally to draw the attention onto them: toxic masculinity is a cage; a dangerous one!

  • The light blue striped shirt, once a quiet emblem of your grandfather’s everyday wear, is reborn as a sharp critique of today’s toxic masculinity. What was once a symbol of comfort and simplicity is now woven with laces, each one binding the wearer; a stark reminder of the invisible cages men are forced to inhabit. These laces, like delicate threads of restraint, evoke the suffocating pressure to conform—an unspoken demand to fit into rigid molds, to embody strength at the cost of vulnerability, to perform masculinity rather than live it.

The collar and cuffs, marked by defiant vertical stripes, challenge the precision of traditional tailoring—a deliberate break in the fabric, as if to say: not everything that is “correct” is right. This asymmetry is not a mistake but a purposeful rupture, a disruption of the flawless ideals men are taught to uphold. It is a quiet rebellion against the perfect lines of masculinity imposed by society.

Yet it is the horizontal laces that steal the gaze, commanding attention not through their form, but through their very purpose. They cut across the garment like bars, stark and unyielding. Toxic masculinity is not just an ideology—it is a cage, a cage built not of metal, but of expectations, pressures, and silent demands. This shirt does not simply clothe the body; it binds it, mirrors the internal struggle, and brings to light the dangerous, often invisible forces that restrict and distort the essence of what it means to be truly free.
